You have to know and understand the type of hair you have, so as to know how to take care of it. Hair type is basing on the texture, scalp condition, quality and feeling of the hair. Remember, what mighty work out for your friends may not always work out for you.

Oily Hair

Characteristics: Greasy, clumps together at the roots, gets dirty quickly.

Cause :Genetics, over-stimulation of oil glands due to stress, vitamin deficiency, poor diet, sweat

Remedy: Shampoo often with a gentle, “frequent use” shampoo

Dry Hair

Characteristics: Dull, breaks, easily frizzy, prone to split ends, stiff.

Cause: Genetics, environmental factors (sun, salt, chlorine), scalp deficient in fatty acids or other nutrients, over processing (perms, straightening, relaxing, blow-drying, aggressive styling products and hair colouring)

Remedy: Use a moisturizing shampoo (look for wheat germ oil on the ingredients list) and conditioner along with an intensive conditioning treatment once a month or, if super dry, every two weeks; cut back on your use of the blow dryer, look for gentler products (relaxer without lye, low ammonia, low peroxide hair colour); and simplify your hairstyle, so you won’t need to manipulate your hair as much.

Normal Hair

Characteristics: Strong, soft, shiny, full of body, easy to handle

Cause: Genetics, well balanced diet, gentle hair care

Remedy: Keep doing what you are doing; shampoo every couple of days or daily with a gentle “frequent use” shampoo.

Oily Scalp, Dry Hair (Combined)

Characteristics: It happens; you can have hair that is greasy at the roots and dull, lackluster, stiff, and brittle on the end.

Cause: Over processing

Remedy: Shampoo every other day with a shampoo for normal hair, and concentrate on the scalp. Alternate once a week with a purifying (clarifying) shampoo; use a moisturizing conditioner from mid strand down to the end and a deep conditioner once a month

After cleaning your hair and scalp well, sleep overnight without applying anything on your hair. In the morning, take a piece of tissue and dab it on your hair and scalp. If there is oil patches on the tissue, that is to communicate and indicator of oily hair. If the tissue paper remains dry, then most probably you have dry hair.

Just like home testing the type of skin one has, the same procedure can simply be followed to know the type of hair one has. There are also different hair types based on the appearance
